The Project:
Experiencing Paradoxical Emotions
Designers have always been relying on emotions to engage their target audience because visuals are capable to evoke emotional responses. But, generalising positive emotions to pleasant experiences, and negative emotions to unpleasant experiences, has limited the scope of emotions designers aim to convey through design, reduce the chance of exploring other emotions potentially pleasurable.
This project aims to provide easily understood knowledge about Paradoxical Theory as the method to create a rich experience visual. To effectively show the application of paradoxical theory, narratives are chosen because they are |
a cognitively and emotionally natural way for people to communicate. Telling a story or connecting visuals to a coherent theme. Narratives allow designers to create an underlying emotional track that runs trough visuals. A prominent feature of narratives is that they are capable of captivating audience regardless of whether they are based on real experience or are completely fictional.
As graphic designers, we have the skills to improve the communication of a moral value and/or entertain our audience through the presentation and visualisation of the story. Paradoxical |
theory can be an effective way to increase user experience while getting them to absorb the information.
Hence, this project aims to show the use of paradoxical theory, with dystopian narratives as the platform to demonstrate the concept and framework. Its main purpose is to get designers to understand the effectiveness of the theory, and be braver to apply paradoxical emotions in their future works. |
The Author-Designer:
Rysta Renne
Rysta Renne is graduating from Lasalle College of the Arts with a Bachelor Degree in Design Communication. Her interest in graphic design began with her love for doodling and sketching since childhood. She has always believed that design has the power to influence people's mind. Her love for fantasy and adventure games and novels made her convinced that essentially the complex and unpredictable stories are the foundation of a strong design (but of course with reasonable design skills).
|
Rysta has a dream to engage and move people's heart and feelings through her works. And because she has confidence in design and writing, she decided to use her graduation project as a chance to show both her skills as a graphic designer and as an author (content designer).
During her free time, she engages frequently with photography. Or sometimes just treat herself for a movie marathon night. |
